Islamabad: Rescue teams have recovered the bodies of renowned British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal “Nims” Purja and six other climbers after a devastating avalanche struck Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram range. The recovery operation has brought partial closure to one of the deadliest mountaineering disasters in the region in recent years, although search efforts continue for the remaining missing climbers.
A Rescue Mission in One of the World’s Toughest Mountain Ranges
The avalanche hit Broad Peak—an 8,051-meter mountain and one of the world’s fourteen “eight-thousanders”—during an international climbing expedition. Difficult weather, unstable snow, and the mountain’s remote terrain complicated rescue operations, forcing teams to work under hazardous conditions for several days.
Authorities confirmed that seven bodies, including Purja’s, have now been recovered. Rescue personnel continue searching for the remaining climbers despite deteriorating weather conditions and the constant risk of additional avalanches.
