Today Linden Lab announced that they will be using a company called Aristotle’s Integrity for the “first stage” of Identity Verification. The company, based in Washington D.C. is run by John Aristotle Phillips, who once designed an atomic bomb to get himself out of bother at Princeton University. He wrote a book called “Mushroom: The True Story of the A-Bomb Kid“. Now his company Aristotle International pits its software against ruses of underage teenagers trying to gamble or buy alcohol or cigarettes online. Phillips, 50, is not so much poacher-turned gamekeeper as nuclear physicist turned web nanny.

On May 9, 2007 Inigo Chamerberlin wrote an Op/Ed article at the Second Life Herald, titled “Philip Linden’s Folly“. Definitely worth a read, paying close attention to the links near the bottom.

This “first stage” will verify age. There’s no mention of what the “second stage” will consist of, and if the next level of verification will be required to access areas marked as “restricted”, once it comes along.

An Editorial

For the last week and a half, I have gone back and forth in my mind curious as to what I wanted to write about. There are so many subjects dear to my heart in regard to Second Life, its residents, its economy, and the system as a whole. It was a very difficult decision, and in the end I decided to publicly contemplate my own place in Second Life.

Of course, any time you write about yourself in general, people start talking about ego. I hope that is not the case here. I am hoping I can make a bigger point about Second Life business as a whole. We'll see.

As many of you know, I have experienced a lot of very intense drama in Second Life this year. My IPO, beneath-the-surface conflicts with AVIX, a lot of publicity that I didn't really ask for... and now my new position with the SL Capital Exchange . Thank goodness the latter of those things is actually turning out very positive for me.

The thing is, throughout all these situations, my entire real life has been 'tied up' with Second Life. Why is that?

Something that I’ve been noticing a lot of, lately is blogs that try to call themselves “news” sites. I’m not saying that some blogs don’t deliver some news, but a lot of these blogs really give the writer’s opinion on particular topics. It’s usually not unbiased news, but rather editorial pieces that, if written in the real world, would be stuck in a small section called “Letters to the editor”.

I’ve noticed it for a while, but what really got my attention, this morning is one of Prokofy’s tweets. Now, I have a lot of respect for her opinions and I agree with a “lot” of what she says, but I really wish that she wouldn’t call her new “blog” (The Second Life Record) a “newspaper”. Call it what it is. That’s what she’s been known to say about a lot of other things, so if she reads this, I hope she’ll understand what I mean.

Those who know me know that I DO NOT give out free money (except if it’s for camping) simply because I want people earn money and learn how to support themselves, instead of receiving handouts.  Having said that, I feel that the IPO of the Wise Motors Distribution Corporation (Capex: WMDC) is as close to a free handout as you can get.  The business model is sound, and profits can be made.  I would be shocked if the business did not make back what it raised in IPO in less than a few months.  It’s only going to cost you 1,500,000L to buy up 75% of the business, so this is as cheap as it’s going to get.

Why am I making it so cheap?  Two reasons.

Well, SL was pretty dead today. However among my IMs and notecards, I noticed a few random things that may or may not be worth mentioning - here they are!

Maelstrom Baphomet had to log off for real-life stuff (Sorry, Mael)

jasper Tizzy was playing with his new MasterCard (Pass that my way?)

Arbitrage Wise was afk baking cookies (See note to jasper, Arb)

Lindsay Druart was surfing SL, making CapEx policy, in math class (Need an assistant?)

Tumult Ivanova was chatting on the boards at CapEx/AVIX (Can't say much, I was there too!)

Strange Ranger was ignoring me in Google Chat (I was ignoring some guy named Tom.)

Marvel Ousley was leaving messages on SL Reports toll-free number (I think you confused us with Dial-A-Date... I'll email you the number)

'Til Next Time,
~ Xavier

For the last few weeks, I have been sitting on the sideline observing all of these situations without saying anything because I did not want to get JT Financial involved in all of the mess.  But it is hard for me to sit on the sideline developing legitimate businesses to help grow Second Life, only to watch a hand full of people suck the life out of it.  So here goes my anger post:
