ImageToday has been a hectic day, with a mix of everything, including people panicking over nothing and causing a run on the bank.  In case you did not get the minutes to the informal meeting we had, just join the group JT Financial and access old Group Notices - it's there.

To all the business and casino owners that were affected by the recent changes in policy, worrying or trying to circumvent the policy will not help.  In the world of businesses, the only constant is that there will be changes.  The businesses that survive are the ones that are willing to adapt.  Instead of giving up because 'tragedy has occurred', just sit back, recollect your thoughts, and fired again.  Failure is OK, but giving up is shouldn't be.  You may say that it is easier for me to say this because I am not in your position.  But you are wrong, because I was, and on much a larger scale.  If you read my blogs when we first started, I noted that I failed in my import/export business and lost a lot of money, especially for a 24 (or 25) year old with no job.  But I just reloaded and fire again.  If you fail, so what?  Just reload and fire until you get it right.  All you need to do is hit the target once to be successful.

By now, I'm sure a lot of people out there are worrying that they won't have anything to do with their land and will be stuck with tier, but they can't sell it because everyone else might be doing the same thing.  So what can they do?  Well, if I owned a small parcel, this is what I would do:

ImageI would set up a mall, without really being a mall.  With the Wise Metaverse Management system, it would theoretically take only 1 prim for a store owner to advertise everything they have in your mall because that owner can rotate as many textures as he wants on that 1 prim, and give out landmark or information to his main store.  So set up a nice organized place, build up some traffic, and sell 1-2 prim ad spaces to store owners.  I would assume the store owners would be glad to pay a few Lindens a week/month to place an ad at your store, since they never really have to go back there to make updates.  Plus, they can track impression and click counts on those prims to see how well you're doing in terms of traffic.  So now, your job is to just drive traffic there.  Maybe create a small niche club with a theme and invite a few of your friends over to have fun.  After all, isn't that what most people are in SL for, to have fun and socialize?  Hope this helps.

What is next?

The author of this article ducks this question, but I think it is the key question.

My surmise is that Linden Labs is "cleaning up" Second Life to chase big corporations.

That means "controlling" or eliminating all small competition plus anything that would look bad on an annual report.

My list: "kinky sex" (Furries, BDSM, Gor), "glorification of violence" - all the "combat sims, gay sex, interracial sex. Well the list is truly endless.

In short everything that has made Second Life popular.

The problem is exacerbated because SL lacks a great many things that large corporations need, IBM has even published a short list of them. Many are simply fundamental shortcomings of the SL setup.

I differ with Arbitrage in his approach to SL business (possibly our ages, I am 63 in RL); my observation is that business never thrives in a dictatorship and Second Life at present is a dictatorship.

Slowly but surely Second Life is being dragged along th path that all such structures must follow just because of what they are.

MY RL business will only use SL as a toy until I see some of these issues addressed.

I'm not sure that it's "nothing" that Ginko can't cover it's deposits and dropped it's daily withdrawal limit 98% in one move. Maybe it's related to the casino ban, maybe it's the land availabilty, maybe it's that a critical mass of people googled "ginko ponzi" at the same time, but it's not "noting." By way of disclosure, does Arbitrage Wise have any funds on deposit at Ginko?

If you want my opinion, "off the record," I think that Linden Labs is chasing away the corporations themselves.

I have been lucky enough to speak to many, many marketing folk from RL that are ATTEMPTING to work in Second Life.

The number one complaint I hear is capacity. A successful real-life conferencing company just left Second Life due to the fact that they could not have over 40 people in their sim at a time and still be able to function reasonably while running all the scripted objects they had spent thousands of real-life dollars developing.

Another complaint I have heard is about - you guessed it - the grid problems! Updates and changes to the system occur so randomly and often unannounced. I don't know how many times I have crashed or been logged out while in the middle of a sale or a business function.

This place, at this stage of the game, is not well-suited for full-time business and I can understand how it could be terribly frustrating to real-life marketers trying to work here, with no real experience on how to deal with these things.
