Sony announced this week that it's ambitious MMPOG project "Home" will be ready for a launch in time for Christmas.
Home has been in the development pipeline for some time, and joins the MMPOG space which will soon be exited by Google's "Lively" product.
Compared to Second Life, Home will be restricted by a number of factors, including the obvious exclusion of Sex-based interaction. Also it is not known whether there will be a virtual economy which users can interact in as consumers AND entrepreneurs within the game. By all reports currently Sony and game developers for the console are going to be the only "businesses" selling goods to Home Residents.
Home may end up becoming more popular with gamers who will use the service to network and challenge gamers from around the world on the console's other games, a direct attempt to replicate XBox Live's service.
The Nintendo Wii was the first of the major console systems to allow gamers to create a custom avatar that could interact with other avatars through worldwide networking.
