The Virtual Worlds’ answer to My Space has been created to build on the progress made around the globe in machinima, original music, photography, the arts and the overall culture of the Metaverse.

My Metaverse (www.mymetaverse.ning.com) was launched today with 52 foundation members from different virtual worlds such as Second Life, Kaneva, Entropia Universe, Open Life Grid and Twinity.

The new social network provides a platform for musicians, machinimatographers, journalists, writers and others involved in news and entertainment is the fast-growth virtual world space.

Founder Steve Cropper (also known as Angelico Babii, host of the LATE SHOW on www.metaverse-tv.com) said that the new social network is indicative of what lies ahead for the virtual worlds.  “At the moment, it is very difficult – if not impossible – for citizens of a virtual world to move seamlessly between worlds.  We have to have multiple accounts and different avatars, use different systems and cope with sometimes very different operating environments.  While this remains the case, we are set to remain somewhat isolated from one another.  And whereas some may not see this as a bad thing, I personally believe that a global approach to the virtual worlds is worth pursuing.  My Metaverse seeks to break down the technological barriers that keep the virtual worlds separate by providing a platform for people involved in the development of new media arts across all worlds”.

The Australian journalist and TV presenter said that My Metaverse aims to achieve for the media arts community in the virtual worlds what My Space has done for social networks across the planet.

“We are inviting musicians to upload their original music, machinimatographers to share their original movies and writers to publish their original works,” said Steve.  “Our goal is to be a meeting place and a source of creative talent in the Metaverse, where media artists can network with each other”.

He said that My Metaverse also aims to become a reference point for entrepreneurs and promoters where they can find emerging talent around the world, which is increasingly turning to the Internet as an affordable and accessible way to launch and boost their careers.

Using the universally-available ‘Ning’ system for social networks, the My Metaverse site is a prototype and operators intend to migrate the network to a dedicated website very soon.

My Metaverse is allied to virtual TV station, Metaverse Broadcasting Company (MBC-TV), run by CEO Robustus Hax from its base in Second Life.  The strategic partnership between MBC and My Metaverse is set to launch other online media holdings, including the soon-to-be-launched online news magazine Metaverse-Tribune, which, like its Metaverse siblings, is dedicated to providing news and entertainment as well as promoting participation in the virtual worlds.
