 Virtual and real worlds are colliding, and not necessarily in a good way. Second Life, a popular online fantasy world, now has crime and it’s not virtual law enforcement that is looking into the situations, reports the Washington Post
Police in Belgium and Germany are looking into crimes that been committed by “avatars” or virtual chaacters. One avatar in Belgium has law enforcement there looking into an alleged rape, and German police received pictures of an animated child character engaging in simulated sex with an animated adult figure. The latter could violate German laws against child pornography, prosecutors said.

Reuters has found a new way to engage with real customers through its virtual counterpart, according to Adam Pasick, a virtual journalist at Reuters.
In a master class on Web 2.0, Pasick told the 2007 World Editors Forum about the virtual Reuters news bureau that exists in the 3D virtual world known as Second Life.

The prosecuting authorities of the northern German city of Bremen (which is also a German federal state) have confiscated child pornography material from a user of the popular Internet game "Second Life." A spokesman of the Public Prosecutor's Office on Monday confirmed a report to this effect aired by "Report Mainz," a political TV magazine broadcast by the major German public broadcaster ARD. In the course of a search of his home last week officers had also searched a computer belonging to the suspect, the spokesman declared. The man had earlier tried to delete the files with child pornography content on his hard disk, the spokesman added. Specialists of the criminal investigation department had, however, been able to restore the files, he said.
