Simon Hendery: Virtual worlds can bring real benefits for business (New Zealand Herald)

For many employers, social networking websites like Facebook are a menace - an all-too tempting distraction for staff who can easily waste hours of work time keeping up with friends online.

With the cumulative cost of an employee who spends, say, an hour a day surfing unproductively potentially adding up to thousands of dollars a year, it is no surprise many businesses are blacklisting sites like Facebook. But others argue there are business advantages to be had out of social networking, and even from the increasingly popular pastime of living out a virtual existence in online realms such as Second Life.

Linden Lab said Wednesday that identity checks will soon be required to visit some areas of its virtual world Second Life.

The San Francisco company said the ID system will be voluntary except in restricted areas of Second Life that contain adult material. Voluntary ID verification will benefit interaction between Second Life users in other areas, the company said.

Aristotle, a Washington, D.C., company, will provide the ID system. People will need to give their driver's license number or passport number or the last four digits of their social security number. Other types of national ID cards will also be accepted.

Linden Lab said it won't keep the information submitted through the ID system.

CHICAGO - Men wearing pink wigs and fishnet stockings, people dressed like red devils, vampires and fairies, and six-foot-tall furry dogs all showed that the real world could be just as unreal as the virtual one during the Second Life masquerade ball - part of the popular site's third annual Community Convention this past weekend.

The masquerade ball wrapped up the volunteer-run convention, which brought together 825 people, many of whom had only met in the virtual, 3-D world of Second Life. Boasting more than 9 million registered users on its Web site, San Francisco-based Linden Lab, which created Second Life, did not put on the event but provided support for it.

"This conference highlights that Second Life is social. It brings people together from around the globe that already know each other," said Dominic Scott of the United Kingdom, who goes by Katier Reitveld inside Second Life, where he works as a journalist.

CNET has a story up that looks at the paradox of Second Life: Linden's belief that it will be bigger than the internet and their desire that the mainstream media not overhype their product. It's an interesting question for a game that gets more mainstream media attention than a game 116 times its size (World of Warcraft).

By Steve Johnson, Tribune Internet critic

"Who has had sex in Second Life in this room? Show of hands," asked the moderator, a man who calls himself, inside the virtual world, Nexeus Fatale.

Nearly every one of the roughly 200 people in the Hilton's Boulevard Room raised a hand.

"The people who weren't raising their hands are all liars," Fatale said.

This was, granted, a self-selecting group, the subset of Second Life Community Convention-goers who chose to attend a panel on "Sex and Relationships in Virtual Worlds."

But still.
