POUGHKEEPSIE, NY.- Little did Steve Taylor imagine how much interest his digital re-creation of the Sistine Chapel would stir, in the emerging online world known as Second Life. After two months of steadily piecing together the project -- an hour here, a couple of hours there -- Taylor's creation went live on Monday, July 2, and at 11:30 that morning he sent an announcement to an international mailing list for educators using Second Life. "By 1:30, there had been 73 visits. By the end of the following day, there had been 420," said Taylor, director of academic computing services at Vassar College. "It had been described in a number of blogs, and snapshots had been posted at flickr.com. Now eight weeks later, there have been more than 3,000 visits." With estimates of 1.6 million people worldwide actively participating and interacting in Second Life, Vassar's Sistine Chapel has crystallized for many people the best educational possibilities of the online technology. Popular sentiment might be turning a bit against virtual world Second Life from San Francisco's own Linden Labs. But it's still generating some buzz, with a successful convention in Chicago last week and now some love from the reigning king of pop Justin Timberlake. Timberlake is set to offer up some behind-the-scenes footage and exclusive video segments through Second Life starting Friday through the Labor Day weekend. The event, which is being sponsored by Comcast, culminates on Monday with Second Life airing the first ten minutes of JT's big Madison Square Garden performance. On Friday, Second Life will be showing 20 minutes of backstage interviews with Timberlake, his musical director, choreographer and band members. There will be another 20 minutes of footage on Saturday. On Sunday, there will be a 10-minute exclusive video shown called "The Dirt on the JT tour." All the events will air at 10 a.m. PDT and 4 p.m. PDT. READ IT ALL AT: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfga...

Do you have a second? Need a second chance? Are bad puns second nature to you now? Okay, I'll stop, but by now you probably guessed that Second Life is today's topic. More specifically, there are two items of interest. First, Drew Harry and Dietmar Offenhuber -- two MIT graduate students (which implies the "first" student and the "second" student) -- from the Sociable Media Group in the Media Lab have won MIT’s Second Life Design Competition. The challenge was to design and create within Second Life campus living spaces, represented by clusters of "Pods" that would let any student join Second Life and, with little foreknowledge, create and add their own Pod to a cluster. For many employers, social networking websites like Facebook are a menace - an all-too tempting distraction for staff who can easily waste hours of work time keeping up with friends online. With the cumulative cost of an employee who spends, say, an hour a day surfing unproductively potentially adding up to thousands of dollars a year, it is no surprise many businesses are blacklisting sites like Facebook. But others argue there are business advantages to be had out of social networking, and even from the increasingly popular pastime of living out a virtual existence in online realms such as Second Life. Linden Lab said Wednesday that identity checks will soon be required to visit some areas of its virtual world Second Life. The San Francisco company said the ID system will be voluntary except in restricted areas of Second Life that contain adult material. Voluntary ID verification will benefit interaction between Second Life users in other areas, the company said. Aristotle, a Washington, D.C., company, will provide the ID system. People will need to give their driver's license number or passport number or the last four digits of their social security number. Other types of national ID cards will also be accepted. Linden Lab said it won't keep the information submitted through the ID system. READ IT ALL AT: http://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/stor...
