Image(CNN) -- A Korean woman receives death threats because she wouldn't clean up her dog's mess on the subway; a Chinese man suspected of philandering is besieged by angry emails and phone calls; an American college student caught plagiarizing online is turned in by incensed bloggers.

Forget Big Brother, it's the Internet mob that's watching you...

It's a long time since the Internet was populated purely by geeks and freaks. Our personas in virtual space are increasingly integrated with our "real life" identities; a growing number of people have Facebook profiles, blogs and Flickr accounts.

And our physical and virtual worlds are meshing, too. "Flash mobbing" is one of the Internet's stranger crazes. Groups of people organized by Web sites, email and text message descend on public spaces to take part in bizarre demonstrations of performance art.

Rugs, zombies and pillow fights

The first Flash mob took place at Macy's in New York City in June 2003 when over a hundred people converged in the rug department.

ImageWired's Game|Life blog reported that the study's purpose "was to determine the how and why griefing occurs, and what carryover it can have on the victims' real lives." I have my own griefer theories, but the phenomenon is far from having been fully explored and I find any new research fascinating.

Recently, I asked my 14-year-old daughter Sam to let me follow her around on the web. I wasn’t trying to pry, mind you. “Oh yeah, right, Dad!” says Sam. (What is the emoticon for an adolescent eye-roll, by the way?) I really just wanted to understand how her generation was coming to use the medium as an always-on device. “Dad, that is such a lame tactic!” Turns out that if you run just a couple of background checks and DNA scrapings on some of your daughter’s male friends, a parent gets forever branded as a “spy.” Teenagers!

THE place isn’t even five years old, but technology giants such as IBM, Microsoft, Dell and Sun Microsystems already maintain sprawling, futuristic offices there. They are joined by the likes of adidas, Calvin Klein, Coca-Cola, Sony BMG, Toyota and General Motors. Media outfits such as the British Broadcasting Corp., Sky News and Reuters operate out of the area, as do a number of US federal agencies. Last month, Sweden became the first country to establish an embassy there.
