ImageSo, you've missed your chance to be one of the 30 to chat about customer support directly to LL. Of course, whatever you write here might not be read and noticed, but we know that Lindens do read SLI at least sometimes, so what would you like to see?
I'll start you off with a few of my pet peeves:
  1. Faster information on the blog about problems. SLI isn't run by LL, and often reports issues before they do, in more detail than they do. Kudos to us, but come on LL you should have the hard data directly to hand!
  2. Details about problems after the event. Occasionally they do a good job of this. Make it SOP.
  3. The blog fails miserably as a many-many communication tool - and comments are mostly turned off now. Rethink how you use the blog in order to:

Virtual worlds in the real world

I'm speaking at a couple of games/virtual worlds events in London this week, which may (or may not) be of interest to readers of this blog. The first is Science in Virtual Worlds, happening tomorrow night, organised by the Royal Institute and taking place at the Apple Store on Regent Street:

Online worlds are social spaces too, and that makes them attractive to social scientists. How do we develop meaningful relationships with people we've never seen or heard? How do those with autism or schizophrenia fare? Do gender roles or moral codes alter? How does information travel and how can there be economies, uprisings and fads? What are the ethics of studying the denizens of these worlds -- are they different from real world citizens? Join us at the Apple Store on Regent Street for a free event on how science is expanding into virtual life.

Counter-terror methods used online to trap paedophiles

Police monitoring paedophiles who use the internet to abuse children are adopting counter-terrorist techniques to gather evidence, the Guardian has learned.

Exploiting freedoms unavailable to police in other countries, British detectives are infiltrating sex offender networks on the internet. Masquerading as online paedophiles in search of explicit photos and videos of child sex abuse - or real-time access to children - they have managed to "get inside the world" of online sex offenders.

Jim Gamble, chief executive of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop), said undercover officers were penetrating groups that colleagues in the US were unable to due to legislative restraints, using investigative methods more typically used to crack Islamist terrorist networks or drug trafficking gangs.

SECOND LIFE
n a separate development, Ceop is creating a "walk-in" headquarters in Second Life, a virtual world where some 7 million members adopt online personas. Detectives are concerned that offenders will gain access to the teen version of the virtual networking site, for 13 to 17-year-olds.

The move - believed to be the first case of a UK law enforcement agency operating in the virtual sphere - comes after detectives observed sex offenders mirroring the online behaviour of young people and moving into new domains, including virtual worlds and gaming websites such as RuneScape which enable "chat" between users.

Ceop consults with a panel of 60 children to keep up to date with user habits.

Thanks to the imminent release of a Japanese language version, more Nipponjin are set to live a "Second Life," with critics warning the online game could be a danger to those who don't even have a first one, according to Shukan Shincho.

"Normally in online games you become a character and you go around having adventures, clobbering other characters, or whatever. But in 'Second Life,' the game operated by the American company Linden Research Inc., there's no particular goal. It's almost like a simulation of the real world and in this virtual reality you have fun communicating, living and doing all sorts of different events," an IT insider tells Shukan Shincho.

Oh, its actually a live filming of CNN Future Summit which is to be aired 13th June 2007 at CNN International. The topic of this edition is on virtual worlds.

It is actually filmed in 2 parts, 1st part done in Stanford University in California, which Philip Rosedale (founder and CEO of Linden Lab) was also invited as one of the panelists. The Singapore audience managed to see a “beta” version of what the editors had done editing, through just a 42? plasma screen. Isn’t really that clear for everyone in the studio to see, but I was lucky enough to be relatively near it.
