Suncorp GM: Second Life trumps videoconferencing (Opinion, SearchCIO)

Second Life is potentially a better communications tool than video conferencing, according to Gavin Keeley, General Manager of Solutions at Suncorp Metway.

"I believe the conversations before and after the meeting can be as important as a meeting itself," Keeley said in an interview with SearchCIO.com.au. "In the sterile environment of a conference call you do not get the pre-and-post-call interaction."

"What you find with Second Life meetings is the sidebar conversations happen. People say to themselves: 'George is here, I'll have a chat with him after the meeting,' which doesn't happen on a conference call."

Those secondary conversations, Keeley believes, can be as important as the conference call or videoconference itself, making the more casual and persistent environment of a Second Life meeting more conducive to collaboration.

Six Major Second Life Content Creators Sue Alleged Copyright Infringer (Legal, Virtually Blind)

ImageSix major Second Life content creators have filed a lawsuit (.pdf) in the Eastern District of New York claiming copyright and trademark infringement against Second Life user Thomas Simon, who allegedly exploited a flaw in the Second Life software to duplicate thousands of copies of the creators’ products. Simon allegedly sold these products to other Second Life users as the well-known avatar ‘Rase Kenzo.’

The allegedly infringing items represent nearly every type of product for sale in Second Life including avatar clothing, skins and shapes, scripted objects, furniture, and more. All of the products allegedly duplicated appear to be covered by plaintiffs’ copyrights and trademarks.

Plaintiffs allege that Thomas Simon, a Flushing, NY resident, used and continues to use the ‘Rase Kenzo’ avatar to duplicate and sell unauthorized copies of the plaintiffs’ products, mainly through scripted in-world JEVN vendors, avatar-to-avatar transactions, and virtual “yard sales.”

Interest Rates in Second Life

Anyone coming in from the outside world’s financial markets into the domain of Second Life banks is likely to be somewhat shocked at the level of the interest rates.  In fact, these rates are so staggering that they are often stated in monthly, if not daily terms.   As an example, the 0.10% daily rate offered on cash deposits by Second Life Capital Exchange (SLCapEx ) results in a staggering 44.03% APR!

Most owners of banks in SL that I have spoken with concede that these rates will in time decrease.  For investors, this could be either a boon or bust depending on how it is handled.

ImageCBS executives, aware of their need to attract a younger generation of viewers interested in interacting with television rather than just watching it, hatched the notion of a story line that involves Second Life, the virtual world in which members create fantasy characters for themselves — known as avatars — and engage in simulated adventures in a highly stylized animated environment populated by other enthusiasts.

In the episode for Oct. 24 (sneak peek video), Mac Taylor, played by Gary Sinise, finds himself entering the computer-based virtual world known as Second Life, walking (and sometimes flying) around three-dimensional, animated Manhattan landmarks, recreated by a technique called machinima, and pursuing not a suspect but an avatar

Vodafone Inside Out, which launched a beta mobile operation in Second Life yesterday which will enable users to connect real life with the virtual world, says that it will only be advertised in the virtual world through Second Life newspapers The AvaStar and Metaverse Messenger.

The Vodafone Inside Out service will enable users to call other Second Life avatars and connect the call to mobile phones in the real world. It will enable Second Life friends to speak to each other offline when one is online. Users can also send messages to friends in the virtual world when they're offline and can send and receive texts using their own virtual identity on their real life mobile.

Users will receive unique numbers for calls and texts and will be offered free handsets which can be collected from the Vodafone InsideOut vending machine (SLURL). The service within Second Life will be free until 30 November 2007.

Justin Bovington, CEO of London-based virtual world agency Rivers Run Red, said: "The link between the first world and second world is coming together. This is what we're calling the 'second wave' of projects coming into Second Life - a move towards brands developing compelling, relevant and immersive technology applications for the virtual worlds."
