It's payday for Janine Hawkins. Not in the real world, where she is a student at Nipissing University in Ontario, but in the online world of Second Life, where she is managing editor of the fashion magazine Second Style. The fashion-conscious female avatars in Second Life often shop for a provocative look. Ms. Hawkins, who in Second Life takes on the persona of Iris Ophelia, a beauty with flowing hair and flawless skin, keeps a list of things she wants to buy: the latest outfits from the virtual fashion mecca Last Call, a new hairstyle from a Japanese designer, slouchy boots. When she receives her monthly salary in Linden dollars, the currency of Second Life, she spends up to four hours shopping, clicking and buying. After a year and a half, she owns 31,540 items. Living it up in Second Life is a break from Ms. Hawkins’s part-time job as a French translator, but she works just as hard in the virtual world. READ IT ALL AT: http://www.nytimes.com

Second Life, 7 Sep 2007. When planning your next city trip, you might include Bruges, Belgium, on your list this year. But before visiting Bruges, don’t forget to visit Virtual Bruges in Second Life. Virtual Bruges is a reconstruction of the historic city of Bruges. Walk around in a 3D virtual representation of a central part of Bruges and explore the old houses and monuments before planning your real life city trip. During your visit of Bruges in Second Life, ask other Second Life residents information about what historical places to visit, which shops and restaurants to try out. You might not yet taste the food in virtual Bruges, but you can select those restaurants that are in a nice environment. Residents of Second Life can participate in events the will be held in Virtual Bruges, rent a house or the more business-minded residents can open a shop in one of the houses. To rent a house or shop, contact AnnSophie Maertens in-world. The island (Belgique - SLURL) will be open for the general public on 15/Sep/2007. Even though there are quite a few people who already know who I am in RL, I'm sure that there's many more who have no idea. Along with the other people that make up the SL Reports Board of Directors, in an attempt to be much more transparent, I plan on letting you know more than you ever wanted to about the guy behind Strange Ranger, Tom Simpson. I was born in 1969, in a little town called Chicago. I lived in the Northern suburbs of Chicago until I was 14, when my family and I moved out to Loveland, Colorado. I spent most of my teenage years getting in trouble with my parents. Seven months after graduating from LHS in 1987, I made the worst mistake of my life. I ended up divorcing that mistake, five years later. In 1994, I met the love of my life, and we've been together, ever since. We moved up to Jamestown, ND in 1996 (don't ask why... we still don't know the answer to that).

By Farqot Gustafson, Reporter SLReports.net Like many of you, hardly a week goes by that this reporter doesn't hear about the latest and greatest new club opening. A lot of hot air and hype gets generated, but in the end, most new clubs are a lot like the old standbys. Earlier this month, I found the newly built Greeneyes Lounge in Oleg, which has a style that's a little different than many other jazz clubs. I recently sat down with the owner, BlueRock Dimsum, to talk about the club, and what sheís doing to make it stand out. As BlueRock put it, "What made me do it is my love of jazz, and the absence of small, intimate Jazz clubs from the special era when Frank, Dean, and Ella where swinging, and the patrons drank real Gin martinis the kind of place where the 'Rat Pack' might hang out after the show."
