Huntington, WV. - September 14, 2007 – Meme Science, LLC, a leading provider of web based marketing solutions and development services today announced it has received a contract from the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Fund to create a replica of the Vietnam Veteran’s War Memorial Wall in Second Life.

Meme Science will open the Vietnam Veteran’s War Memorial Wall simulator to Second Life residents in early November 2007 to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the dedication of ‘The Wall’ that took place in Washington DC in November 1982.

"We feel privileged to be selected as the firm that will build a replica of the Vietnam Veteran’s War Memorial Wall in the Second Life metaverse." said Robert Egan, president of Meme Science. "It will be a welcome challenge to virtually recreate the complex architectural design structure originally created by Maya Ying Li. Our goal is to try to capture some of the experience and heart felt emotions that can only be felt by visiting the real life Memorial Wall in Washington DC, while at the same time bringing attention and honor to those Vietnam Veterans that died or missing giving service to our country on this the 25th anniversary of the Wall’s dedication."

Club Pulse Rocks the Columbia Sim to a Brazilian Beat (SL Reports)

Several of us were sitting around last Wednesday, and at one point the conversation came around to what was the most exotic drink we’d picked in our travels to clubs.  Our friend Bevan said “I’ll bet you’ve never had a Caipirinha, let alone ever heard of one!”  You could have heard a pin drop on the carpet.

She told us that that a Caipirinha (pronounced [kaj.pi.'ri.na]) is Brazil's national cocktail, which is a concoction of Cachaça (made from sugarcane juice), sugar and lime, and that she’d gotten it from Club Pulse, in the Columbia Sim.  After hearing her excited description, we left immediately to check it out.

The first thing that hit me was the music, which is a very workable mix of contemporary Bossa Nova and Electronica.  The DJ, Tarsis Korobase, made it all flow like very few DJ’s I’ve heard, in or out of SL.  Combine that with a spacious dance floor, a large mixed crowd, and plenty of seating for conversation, and it’s a very impressive place.

9/11 Gets a Fitting Memorial in Second Life (News, 3pointD)

There have been several examples of the twin towers being rebuilt in the virtual world of Second Life, but with the anniversary of that awful day with us once again, I would like to bring to your attention a site that I feel deserves a special mention: the World Trade Center sim. As I write this, it is still being finalised, ready for an official opening to coincide with the time the first plane hit. What singles this site out is that it does not attempt to undo what has happened. Rather, it commemorates those from many. many nations who died in that dreadful and tragic atrocity.

It is a solemn and moving experience. Around a square pond is a walkway. Facing towards the pool, and edging the walkway, is a wall of commemoration, simply listing the names of those killed. It would be tempting to say “the fallen”, but I don’t feel abstract euphemisms are appropriate.

It's payday for Janine Hawkins. Not in the real world, where she is a student at Nipissing University in Ontario, but in the online world of Second Life, where she is managing editor of the fashion magazine Second Style.

The fashion-conscious female avatars in Second Life often shop for a provocative look.

Ms. Hawkins, who in Second Life takes on the persona of Iris Ophelia, a beauty with flowing hair and flawless skin, keeps a list of things she wants to buy: the latest outfits from the virtual fashion mecca Last Call, a new hairstyle from a Japanese designer, slouchy boots. When she receives her monthly salary in Linden dollars, the currency of Second Life, she spends up to four hours shopping, clicking and buying. After a year and a half, she owns 31,540 items.

Living it up in Second Life is a break from Ms. Hawkins’s part-time job as a French translator, but she works just as hard in the virtual world.
