What's So Strange About Tom?

Even though there are quite a few people who already know who I am in RL, I'm sure that there's many more who have no idea. Along with the other people that make up the SL Reports Board of Directors, in an attempt to be much more transparent, I plan on letting you know more than you ever wanted to about the guy behind Strange Ranger, Tom Simpson.

I was born in 1969, in a little town called Chicago. I lived in the Northern suburbs of Chicago until I was 14, when my family and I moved out to Loveland, Colorado. I spent most of my teenage years getting in trouble with my parents. Seven months after graduating from LHS in 1987, I made the worst mistake of my life. I ended up divorcing that mistake, five years later.

In 1994, I met the love of my life, and we've been together, ever since. We moved up to Jamestown, ND in 1996 (don't ask why... we still don't know the answer to that).

Like many of you, hardly a week goes by that this reporter doesn't hear about the latest and greatest new club opening.  A lot of hot air and hype gets generated, but in the end, most new clubs are a lot like the old standbys.  Earlier this month, I found the newly built Greeneyes Lounge in Oleg, which has a style that's a little different than many other jazz clubs.  I recently sat down with the owner, BlueRock Dimsum, to talk about the club, and what sheís doing to make it stand out.

As BlueRock put it, "What made me do it is my love of jazz, and the absence of small, intimate Jazz clubs from the special era when Frank, Dean, and Ella where swinging, and the patrons drank real Gin martinis the kind of place where the 'Rat Pack' might hang out after the show."

Art Sanctuary SL Reports, Virtual Worlds, Second Life, Enniv Zarf, Raspirit Heron, Xavier Mohr(From Press Release - Reformatted for style but otherwise unedited.)

Art Sanctuary Isle is a whole new site based on Raspirit Heron's artwork; after initially being started in the skies above Hardangerfjord, Art Sanctuary rapidly evolved into a shared vision between the artist and SL content creator and scripter WieBenIk Beaumont; Raspirit Heron's (aka Tone Aa's) RL paintings are being transformed into an environment; with the moods and atmospheres characteristic in her imagery.

The paintings which the site is based on are also exhibited throughout the site - a fairytale-like island with 'Castle of Golden Apples' (a nine story high castle filled with poems and images), Frog Castle (where her more nature-inspired paintings are shown), and Sun Flower House, Magical apple trees and gates, a chariot pulled by sea horses, and many more SL inspired creations.

SLBrowser creator addresses privacy issues with in-world search HUD (SLReports)

SECOND LIFE, JT WORLD, 24 AUGUST 2007 - In a story posted at SL Reports on August 19th, Second Life residents expressed concerns of privacy invation with SLBrowser, citing the revolutionary in-world search software indexed personal belongings without regard to their nature.

SLBrowser is a HUD system in which users can enter keyword searches that in turn bring up results of items and locations across Second Life. What alarms many, however, is that the autobots that index the Second Life user grid are not really that discriminatory with the items that they input in their database.

Yesterday, I received a message from Diva Canto - a co-creator of SLBrowser - addressing some of the concerns mentioned in the article.

SECOND LIFE, SL REPORTS, 22 AUGUST 2007 - Arbitrage Wise has declared victory with the help of progressive Wikipedia editors, having won his battle against deletion from the online encyclopedia.

Wise was added and subsequently approved for inclusion in Wikipedia before a proposal for deletion was submitted by an editor.

In a heated debate on the "Articles for Deletion" pages , emotions and beliefs ran high.

Said one editor, "The one thing we have to keep in mind is that virtual worlds is probably the future, and as virtual world grows, so will characters such as Arbitrage Wise. Notability should not only be reserved for tangible figures...  and Arbitrage Wise will have a deep impact on Second Life, and possibly the overall economics of virtual world as a whole."

SECOND LIFE, SL REPORTS, 19 AUGUST 2007 - The launch of one of Second Life's most innovative new products, "SLBrowser," has created a lot of buzz among Second Lifers, with many claiming it is destined to be the "Google of the Grid."

SLBrowser is a HUD system in which users can enter keyword searches that in turn bring up results of items and locations across Second Life. What alarms many, however, is that the autobots that index the Second Life user grid are not really that discriminatory with the items that they input in their database.

"I just did a search in SLBrowser on several medication conditions, including AIDS, HIV, etc, and found people who had material on these and other conditions in their [virtual] homes, which might be some indication of their medical status in RL," said one concerned user in an email to SL Reports Publisher Xavier Mohr. "I was also able to ascertain an avatar's likely sexual orientation or activities by looking at the material that come up in their homes."

"I think that once people hear that SLBrowsers bots are rifling through their houses, they will hit the roof. This story will be bigger than copybot," he added.

Indeed, when I obtained a copy of the SLBrowser system myself, I was alarmed to find that a search of my name brought up most objects that own, and even disclosed the location of my unlisted, private office where I do SLReports.net and SL Capital Exchange business.

I will continue to work towards getting feedback from the makers of the new product in an effort to clarify the matter.

Please stay tuned to SLReports.net for more information.
