SLBrowser creator addresses privacy issues with in-world search HUD (SLReports)

SECOND LIFE, JT WORLD, 24 AUGUST 2007 - In a story posted at SL Reports on August 19th, Second Life residents expressed concerns of privacy invation with SLBrowser, citing the revolutionary in-world search software indexed personal belongings without regard to their nature. SLBrowser is a HUD system in which users can enter keyword searches that in turn bring up results of items and locations across Second Life. What alarms many, however, is that the autobots that index the Second Life user grid are not really that discriminatory with the items that they input in their database. Yesterday, I received a message from Diva Canto - a co-creator of SLBrowser - addressing some of the concerns mentioned in the article.
"I'd like to let you know that SLBrowser no longer serves queries on ownership and creation, so if you search for your name again, you will find nothing," said Canto. "We will continue to improve our methods to discard the private information that the sim servers give out," further explained Canto. "While at the same time improving our methods to collect useful public information for free." Canto expected most of the privacy concerns would be addressed within a few weeks time.
