Are virtual worlds ready for a CNN to call their own?
LivePlanet, the multiplatform production company behind HBO's "Project Greenlight" and MSN's "Fan Club: Reality Baseball," is launching Virtual Worlds Prods., a media organization that will cover the burgeoning space of virtual worlds.
Two of the biggest online environments, Second Life and World of Warcraft, will get their own branded news services. Their respective publications, Gridworldnews.com and Azerothwn.com, also will serve as beachheads for launching other virtual-only entertainment and community offerings.
The goal is to position LivePlanet as the dominant media force in virtual worlds the way Time Warner or News Corp. approach the real world, LivePlanet president and CEO Larry Tanz said.
"We're trying to be the uber-media agency that services virtual worlds for information and other things," he said. "Advertising, classifieds and personals will follow the content -- content is just the first foray into it."

Linden Lab, today, has announced a sweeping new policy that essetially ban almost all forms of gambling. Part of this new policy says this: "It is a violation of this policy to wager in games in the Second Life (R) environment operated on Linden Lab servers if such games: (1) (a) rely on chance or random number generation to determine a winner, OR (b) rely on the outcome of real-life organized sporting events, AND (2) provide a payout in (a) Linden Dollars, OR (b) any real-world currency or thing of value." "While Linden Lab does not offer an online gambling service, Linden Lab and Second Life Residents must comply with state and federal laws applicable to regulated online gambling, even when both operators and players of the games reside outside of the US. And, because there are a variety of conflicting gambling regulations around the world we have chosen to restrict gambling in Second Life as described in a revised policy which is posted in the Knowledge Base under “Policy Regarding Wagering in Second Life”.
