Second Life, 7 Sep 2007. When planning your next city trip, you might include Bruges, Belgium, on your list this year. But before visiting Bruges, don’t forget to visit Virtual Bruges in Second Life. Virtual Bruges is a reconstruction of the historic city of Bruges. Walk around in a 3D virtual representation of a central part of Bruges and explore the old houses and monuments before planning your real life city trip.

During your visit of Bruges in Second Life, ask other Second Life residents information about what historical places to visit, which shops and restaurants to try out. You might not yet taste the food in virtual Bruges, but you can select those restaurants that are in a nice environment.

Residents of Second Life can participate in events the will be held in Virtual Bruges, rent a house or the more business-minded residents can open a shop in one of the houses. To rent a house or shop, contact AnnSophie Maertens in-world. The island (Belgique - SLURL) will be open for the general public on 15/Sep/2007.

On this opening weekend you can participate in the following events:

Like many of you, hardly a week goes by that this reporter doesn't hear about the latest and greatest new club opening.  A lot of hot air and hype gets generated, but in the end, most new clubs are a lot like the old standbys.  Earlier this month, I found the newly built Greeneyes Lounge in Oleg, which has a style that's a little different than many other jazz clubs.  I recently sat down with the owner, BlueRock Dimsum, to talk about the club, and what sheís doing to make it stand out.

As BlueRock put it, "What made me do it is my love of jazz, and the absence of small, intimate Jazz clubs from the special era when Frank, Dean, and Ella where swinging, and the patrons drank real Gin martinis the kind of place where the 'Rat Pack' might hang out after the show."

SLBrowser creator addresses privacy issues with in-world search HUD (SLReports)

SECOND LIFE, JT WORLD, 24 AUGUST 2007 - In a story posted at SL Reports on August 19th, Second Life residents expressed concerns of privacy invation with SLBrowser, citing the revolutionary in-world search software indexed personal belongings without regard to their nature.

SLBrowser is a HUD system in which users can enter keyword searches that in turn bring up results of items and locations across Second Life. What alarms many, however, is that the autobots that index the Second Life user grid are not really that discriminatory with the items that they input in their database.

Yesterday, I received a message from Diva Canto - a co-creator of SLBrowser - addressing some of the concerns mentioned in the article.

SECOND LIFE, SL REPORTS, 19 AUGUST 2007 - The launch of one of Second Life's most innovative new products, "SLBrowser," has created a lot of buzz among Second Lifers, with many claiming it is destined to be the "Google of the Grid."

SLBrowser is a HUD system in which users can enter keyword searches that in turn bring up results of items and locations across Second Life. What alarms many, however, is that the autobots that index the Second Life user grid are not really that discriminatory with the items that they input in their database.

"I just did a search in SLBrowser on several medication conditions, including AIDS, HIV, etc, and found people who had material on these and other conditions in their [virtual] homes, which might be some indication of their medical status in RL," said one concerned user in an email to SL Reports Publisher Xavier Mohr. "I was also able to ascertain an avatar's likely sexual orientation or activities by looking at the material that come up in their homes."

"I think that once people hear that SLBrowsers bots are rifling through their houses, they will hit the roof. This story will be bigger than copybot," he added.

Indeed, when I obtained a copy of the SLBrowser system myself, I was alarmed to find that a search of my name brought up most objects that own, and even disclosed the location of my unlisted, private office where I do SLReports.net and SL Capital Exchange business.

I will continue to work towards getting feedback from the makers of the new product in an effort to clarify the matter.

Please stay tuned to SLReports.net for more information.

We’ve all had the experience of going to revisit an SL landmark that we hadn’t been to in a while, just to find that it either no longer existed, or had radically changed.  I experienced that recently when I popped in at what had been The Stockholm Ice Club, in Anma.  Instead of revisiting the 1980s club I’d seen on my previous visit, I was now back in the ‘40s!  The music was vintage Big Band Swing Era (instead of Techno), and the décor straight out of Rosie the Riveter.

I ran into the club’s manager, Von Fosse, and asked her what had happened.  According to Ms. Fosse, the current owner, Goss Machin, had had a falling out with his former partner in Stockholm Ice.  “It was a personal thing between them.  They came to a parting of the ways and Goss stayed.  Afterwards, I encouraged him to start making some changes.  Originally the club was a tacky place, with pole dancing and a sex ball in the sauna.  It wasn’t the kind of place that I would have liked.”

She went on to say that “We didn't like the music either, and since Goss and I prefer the Big Band sounds, we changed out of the Techno music into a streaming set of really good stations.”
