SECOND LIFE, Jun 29 – The search for missing children has been extended also to the virtual world of Second Life. There are several posters spread around the virtual world, trying to contribute for the missing children search success. Mupies spread around the streets, spinner cubes with different sizes, even posters carried by avatars showing them in different places, are the strategies used.
Promoting the happening of events with interest to the situation of the missing children and suggest and guide the public debate about subjects related to this kind of problem are activities that have been developed in Second Life. Madeleine McCann is an example of a missing little girl with strong media coverage. Madeleine has been missing since the 3rd of May this year, from a tourist village in Praia da Luz, Algarve, Portugal. Her parents were having dinner inside the village and near to the house where the little Bristish girl was sleeping. The Bristish Police has had conversations with the responsible for Second Life, getting the necessary permission for placing the girl`s photos online, letting the virtual world help with the searches. We are assisting for the first time to a so called multimedia search, as the parents of the missing children are now using more and more potentialities of what media is able to provide (television, radio, newspapers and internet) as a way of calling the attention of wide audiences about their campaigns.
