WASHINGTON, D.C., October 23, 2007 – The World Bank and IFC will venture inside the online virtual world Second Life as they launch their Doing Business 2008 report to the millions strong digital community on October 26, 2007.

During the three-hour event, Dahlia Khalifa, spokesperson for the Doing Business report, will appear in Second Life’s virtual world to present the report and take questions from participants. The presentation will be held on Activ8 Island in Second Life at 11am EDT (3pm GMT, 8am Second Life Time) on Friday, October 26, 2007.

Second Life is an online, virtual world created by its users, also known as residents. It offers a platform for communication, business, and education. Besides residents from North America and Europe, more than 1 in 5 residents logs on to the virtual site from Latin America, Asia or Africa.

The World Bank and IFC have used online distribution for the previous four issues of the Doing Business report. This year, they are adding Second Life to the report’s distribution strategy because of the platform’s ability to broadcast a message to a large international audience with shared interests through real-time interaction.

“Second Life, as a global community with residents from more than 100 countries, is an ideal venue to host a virtual launch of a report that compares how easy it is for people to start and operate a business in 178 economies,” Dahlia Khalifa said. “Second Life is on the frontier of collaboration and technology. It brings people from around the world together by removing boundaries,” she added.

PRESS RELEASE: Second Life Security Team Credited for Griefer-Free Gingrich Event

Sacramento, California, September 29, 2007 -- Second Life’s Metaverse Mod Squad is receiving high praise for its moderation and security services provided this week for Newt Gingrich and his American Solutions workshop at on the steps of the virtual U.S. Capitol.

“In a high profile test of Second Life’s viability as a political forum, Newt Gingrich held a question and answer session of Thursday that went off nearly without a hitch,” reported Eric Reuters of Reuters Second Life News Center.

Metaverse Mod Squad kept a watchful eye throughout, especially for troublemakers known as “griefers,” who have inundated Second Life incidents in the past.  The event was griefer-free.  Although one avatar did arrive at the location – nearly an hour early - in an outfit better suited for the French Riviera, a Metaverse Mod Squad agent quickly approached her and requested a wardrobe change.  After a good-natured exchange, the woman complied.  News reports that the woman was unclothed when the Speaker arrived are inaccurate.

A handful of protesters added some real life political flavor.  American Solutions and the planner of the event, Berkeley-based Clear Ink, actually welcomed the protesters to participate in the event to facilitate a free flow of ideas from a special protestors area.  They did not disappoint, shouting colorful opinions in chat throughout the event.  But they never crossed the line of acceptable political discourse.

“One of the protesters carried a sign that grew increasingly bigger as the hour passed.  He was sent an instant message by [Metaverse Mod Squad] Agent99 that the size was fine, but no bigger.  He responded very respectfully and the sign stayed the same size,” explained Twig Tomorrow, founder and president of Metaverse Mod Squad.  “The event truly went off without a hitch.”

Balancing Individual Rights with Governmental Controls in Second Life (SL Reports)

A Submission to SLReports.net

Brac Collins, SL Reports, Xavier Mohr, Arbitrage Wise, SL Capital Exchange, metaverse, metanomics, virtual world, second lifeThe vast majority of avatars stem from some form of a democratic based RL society. Josh Fairfiled, Professor of Law at Indiana University, as well as recent court cases, have brought attention to the lack of individual rights, beyond the Linden Labs Terms of Service Agreement(TOS).That contract, being bi-lateral, only applies to the end user and the Linden Labs. There is no legally binding contract between users. You legally have no rights other than what is expressed within the TOS agreement.

Second Life is divided by interest, culture, sub-culture, and the virtual world is as diverse and varying in opinion as the avatars that created it. The left wing "Immersionists"  believe that SL is a free world of anonymity and fantasy- to be whoever or whatever you may choose. While a more conservative right wing group the "Augmentationists" believe that is has far more practical potential as an extension of real life. As Economist Adam Smith theorized, the "Invisible Hand" emerges to motivate and guide society, through self interest, to serve the interest of that society as a whole.

Club Pulse Rocks the Columbia Sim to a Brazilian Beat (SL Reports)

SLReports.net

Several of us were sitting around last Wednesday, and at one point the conversation came around to what was the most exotic drink we’d picked in our travels to clubs.  Our friend Bevan said “I’ll bet you’ve never had a Caipirinha, let alone ever heard of one!”  You could have heard a pin drop on the carpet.

She told us that that a Caipirinha (pronounced [kaj.pi.'ri.na]) is Brazil's national cocktail, which is a concoction of Cachaça (made from sugarcane juice), sugar and lime, and that she’d gotten it from Club Pulse, in the Columbia Sim.  After hearing her excited description, we left immediately to check it out.

The first thing that hit me was the music, which is a very workable mix of contemporary Bossa Nova and Electronica.  The DJ, Tarsis Korobase, made it all flow like very few DJ’s I’ve heard, in or out of SL.  Combine that with a spacious dance floor, a large mixed crowd, and plenty of seating for conversation, and it’s a very impressive place.

9/11 Gets a Fitting Memorial in Second Life (News, 3pointD)

Sunday, 09 September 2007

There have been several examples of the twin towers being rebuilt in the virtual world of Second Life, but with the anniversary of that awful day with us once again, I would like to bring to your attention a site that I feel deserves a special mention: the World Trade Center sim. As I write this, it is still being finalised, ready for an official opening to coincide with the time the first plane hit. What singles this site out is that it does not attempt to undo what has happened. Rather, it commemorates those from many. many nations who died in that dreadful and tragic atrocity.

It is a solemn and moving experience. Around a square pond is a walkway. Facing towards the pool, and edging the walkway, is a wall of commemoration, simply listing the names of those killed. It would be tempting to say “the fallen”, but I don’t feel abstract euphemisms are appropriate.
