Students could soon be able to have a virtual drink in their pretend union, go to online lectures or socialise in two-dimensional clubs.

The UEA is currently investigating the possibilities of joining Second Life - an online virtual world where you create an animated person and then visit bars, go to parties and trade in the make-believe economy.

We get so used to the court rulings going in favor of big business and against consumer interests that it's almost stunning when a decision goes in the right direction. So it's all the more exciting to see two different judges at almost the same time rule against the one-sided terms of clickwrap/sneakwrap licenses. What's more, in both cases it's that most insidious of terms, the mandatory arbitration clause, that drew the court's particular scorn.

The case of Bragg v Linden Research has drawn a fair amount of attention, in large part because it involves a user of Linden's Second Life virtual world suing over the value of his virtual property. A little less groundbreaking, but perhaps in its own way no less important, is a small claims case brought by Gateway customer Dennis Sheehan over a defective computer. What ties these two disparate trials together is that both Linden and Gateway tried to get them dismissed on the basis of their sneakwrap "agreements" that say customers must submit disputes to mandatory arbitration procedures.

A VIRTUAL Manchester complete with virtual landmarks has been created by an Ardwick company which aims to be the biggest business in the city's `Second Life'.

Clicks and Links, which specialises in making the internet available to people who wouldn't otherwise discover it, have created a Manchester in the Second Life virtual world.

Schiller presented a case study of how Electric Artists leveraged the Second Life community to prototype future hotels for Starwood. He suggested that Starwood, which was at the early stages of its aloft boutique hotel design program, could gain insight from a community that was focused on development albeit online.

Schiller's team constructed a virtual hotel that encouraged Second Life participants to collaborate on what a next-generation lodging experience should be. Starwood took the feedback from the community, then constructed a prototype hotel near its corporate headquarters. Once the project was complete, the virtual hotel was deconstructed in Second Life.

Manhunt 2 banned

Despite being the first game in ten years to suffer this fate the news that Manhunt 2 has been banned from sale in the UK isn't overly surprising. I've seen the game and it was ugly although the violence - syringes in eye, sledgehammers - is only part of it. Plenty of games get 18 certificates but very few of these are released for PS2 and Wii only - consoles that appeal to a younger age group. Maybe if it was coming out on PS3 and 360 it may have survived. Or maybe not.

Manhunt 2 is distinguishable from recent high-end video games by its unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone in an overall game context which constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or distancing," said David Cooke, director of the BBFC.

IBM and the Massachusetts Institute of technology on Friday hosted an event to explore the potential of virtual worlds, or the 3-D Internet. Although some attendees voiced concerned that virtual worlds like Second Life are overhyped and insecure, experts overall said that these virtual worlds, now used mostly for games, can transform society and business. During the one-day conference, students from MIT and IBM employees showed off applications of virtual worlds in development.

This bucolic virtual setting is more than just eye candy. IBM is working with the Nature Conversancy to compile better information about important river ecosystems. The visualization applications allows policy makers or analysts to model changes in rivers. By configuring the data on the right hand of the screen, a person can simulate what the effect higher temperature or changing water levels will have on a river habitat.

You may be able to fly around chatting to giant rabbits or battling trolls but the lure of virtual worlds such as Second Life is not as strong - for silicon.com readers at least - as you might think.

Asked whether they'd ever visited a virtual world, more than half (58 per cent) of respondents to a silicon.com reader poll said they had never been tempted to find out what life as an orc is like. And although one-fifth (20 per cent) had decided to take the plunge once to see what all the fuss is about, they said they got bored and didn't go back for more.

Second Life - the business evolution
