AVATRAIT NOTED IN SPECIAL ART COLLECTORS’ SUPPLEMENT TO ITALIAN EDITION OF ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST MAGAZINE

Evanston, IL – 02/04/2008 – The Italian publication of Condé Nast magazines’ Architectural Digest recently released a “special supplement” for art collectors called “AD Collectors”.  The cover story of this edition was on the world of “metaverse art” and featured interviews with several real-world European galleries that have been selling pieces from virtual worlds for as much as €7,000!  Even at these very high prices, their recommendation was that collectors should be taking a serious look at this emerging genre.

Of the many thousands of in-world galleries, only Avatrait was mentioned by name, no doubt because the Avatrait Gallery (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Simuality/41/213/35) not only features virtual copies of prints for usage within Second Life environments, but also sells framed high-quality prints through the Avatrait.com web site.

Additionally, the vast majority of the pictures used to illustrate this story (a file of thumbnail pages from the magazine and a translation of the Italian original can be found at http://simuality.com/press/IADC.doc), were artists affiliated with the Avatrait Gallery.

Avatrait founder Greg Houston (Track Hax in S.L.) was extremely pleased and surprised when copies of “AD Collectors” arrived from the Editor-In-Chief of Italian Architectural Digest, Houston was quoted: “It’s just further support for what I’ve been claiming all along, that Second Life art is something special, and is evolving into a genre all its own!”.

Thanksgiving: Fact or Fiction?

As Second Life is gearing up to celebrate the holidays, Thanksgiving is nearing closer.  Second Life members have created stores dedicated to the season to market their home décor and avatar attachments.  With all the hype, one should look back and reflect on what he is thankful for and remember the roots of Thanksgiving.

The first Thanksgiving in Canada dates farther back in history than America’s first recognized feast. Prior to the first formal ceremony in Canada, The First Nations culture offered thanks during autumn; also, the Haudenosaunee (Iroguios) culture prayed in honor to “The Three Sisters” which were beans, corn, and squash.

Some may say the first formal Thanksgiving in North America was held by an English explorer named Martin Frobisher. Frobisher searched for a northern passage to the Orient, but his failure led him to establish a settlement in Canada .  Currently the province Newfoundland and Labrador , Frobisher held a ceremony in 1578, partially to give many thanks for surviving their extensive travel, although he and his followers failed their objective.

Second Fest: Glastonbury without mud (News, PC Advisor)

ImageWell actually there was virtual mud (and portable toilets). But there was no booze, live bands or - I reckon - fun. Second Life and The Guardian this weekend enjoyed their very own music festival. The virtual 'Second Fest'.

Now it's entirely possible that I'm missing the point, getting old or both, but I can't help but ask... why? Surely the point of music festivals is the very physical proximity of friends (and the consumption of insane amounts of things that are bad for you).

And live music itself is only worth the effort because it is performed by, er, real live people in the company of real live other people. (I thought watching the Glastonbury festival on TV was pretty pointless, but I'd draw the line at using an avatar to pretend I was there.)
